Both brands dominate the market with different philosophies. Garmin (Edge 540, 840, 1040, 1050) offers a very rich ecosystem, advanced training features (ClimbPro, adaptive coaching, Stamina) and comprehensive navigation with preloaded European maps. Wahoo (Bolt 3, Roam 3) focuses on simple setup via the smartphone app and physical buttons that are handy in cold weather or when wearing gloves. If you already have a Garmin ecosystem, stick with Garmin. If you’re looking for the quickest setup, Wahoo is the obvious choice. Bryton offers a serious budget alternative (Rider 750, 860) with equivalent features for around €100–150 less.
The 540 and 840 share the same 2.6-inch screen, the same battery life (26 hours in normal use, up to 42 hours in economy mode), and the same training functions.The main difference is that the 840 adds a touchscreen alongside the physical buttons, twice the memory (more pre-loaded maps) and the ability to automatically calculate a route from your current position or to a specific address. The 540 does not allow this on-the-fly route calculation from the unit: you need to plan your route on the app before setting off. For rides that are always planned in advance, the 540 is more than adequate and costs around €100 less.
The touchscreen works well in dry weather with clean fingers, but has its limitations in the rain or when wearing gloves. Garmin offers models that combine touchscreen functionality with physical buttons (Edge 840, 1040, 1050), which is the best compromise. Wahoo (Bolt 3, Roam 3) and the Garmin Edge 540 have buttons only: more reliable in all conditions, but less intuitive for navigating the map. For standard road cycling, the touchscreen is pleasant to use. For gravel, mountain biking or winter rides with thick gloves, buttons are often preferred. The Garmin Edge 840 combines both and remains the benchmark for versatility in this category.
ClimbPro displays, in real time during a climb, the remaining distance, the average gradient, the elevation gain and a visual estimate of the effort required. Since the Edge 540/840 range, ClimbPro works even without a preloaded route, automatically detecting climbs. This is particularly useful on long cycle races with several mountain passes: knowing that there are 4 km left at an 8% gradient allows you to manage your pace and avoid setting off too quickly. Wahoo offers a similar feature called Summit Climbing on its Roam and Bolt models. These features are available on all Garmin cycle computers in the x40 and x50 ranges (540, 840, 1040, 1050).
The advertised battery life is generally achieved under normal use. Garmin Edge 540/840: 26 hours standard, up to 42 hours in power-saving mode. Edge 1040: approximately 35 hours standard, up to 70 hours in power-saving mode. Wahoo Bolt 3: 20 hours. Wahoo Roam 3: 25 hours. Bryton Rider 750: 35 hours. To extend battery life: turn off Bluetooth when notifications are not needed, reduce the backlight, use GPS only (without Glonass/Galileo) and enable power-saving mode on very long rides. The Garmin Solar models (540 Solar, 840 Solar) can double battery life in sunny conditions.
Yes, for occasional use, but the limitations quickly become apparent. A smartphone runs out of battery in 2 to 3 hours of active GPS use, is difficult to read in direct sunlight, and real-time tracking (speed, cadence, power) is less accurate. It gets wet easily and isn’t designed for the ergonomics of cycling. For someone who cycles once or twice a week on familiar routes, a smartphone may suffice with a good mount (Quad Lock, SP Connect). As soon as your goals become more specific (cyclosportives, navigating unfamiliar terrain, training tracking), a dedicated bike computer quickly becomes essential.
Most cycle computers use the Garmin mounting standard (quarter-turn), which is compatible with the majority of aftermarket mounts. On integrated or aero handlebars, direct access to the standard mounting point can be difficult. The most common solutions: K-Edge or Garmin Out-Front mounts on the stem (positioning the computer in front of the handlebars for better readability and an aerodynamic profile), Wahoo Aero Bar Mount adapters for triathlon handlebars, or integrated mounts offered by certain cockpit manufacturers (Zipp, 3T, Enve). Check compatibility with the handlebar diameter (standard 31.8 mm or cockpit-specific) before purchasing.
Both protocols connect sensors (heart rate, cadence, power), but ANT+ is the long-standing standard in cycling. ANT+ allows a sensor to connect to multiple devices simultaneously (cycling computer and GPS watch at the same time), is more resistant to interference in dense pelotons, and offers better compatibility between brands. Bluetooth is more universal (smartphones, general-purpose sports watches) but generally only supports one connection per sensor at a time. Garmin, Wahoo and Bryton support both protocols. For power meters and heart rate belts specifically designed for cycling, ANT+ compatibility is the benchmark.
For cycle touring, the priorities are screen size, built-in mapping and battery life. The Garmin Edge 1040 (or 1050), with its large 3.5-inch screen and global mapping, is the benchmark. The Garmin Edge Explore 2 is a cheaper alternative designed for navigation rather than training: a simplified interface and large touchscreen, without the advanced performance metrics. The Wahoo Elemnt Roam 3 is highly rated for its readability and intuitive navigation. For multi-day bikepacking, the Garmin Solar models or the Edge 1040, with their very long battery life, are particularly well-suited.
The market is divided into three tiers. Entry-level (€150–300): Bryton Rider 450 or 750, Garmin Edge 130 Plus — sufficient for speed, distance and some basic data, but limited in terms of navigation or advanced metrics.
