All three models share the same core features but differ in screen size, battery life and touchscreen capabilities. The Edge 540 (2.6-inch, non-touchscreen) is the most compact and affordable (~€380–450). The Edge 840 (2.6-inch, touchscreen + buttons) adds a touchscreen, double the memory and a few extra navigation features (~€500). The Edge 1040 (3.5-inch, touchscreen) is the largest: better readability for navigation, 35-hour battery life, and global mapping in the Solar version. For most competitive cyclists, the Edge 840 offers the best value for money.
ClimbPro is a feature that displays the profile of the current climb in real time, showing the remaining effort. It indicates the total distance of the climb, the current gradient, the maximum gradient ahead and the remaining elevation gain. Since the Edge 840 and 840 Solar, ClimbPro has operated in ‘free-ride’ mode: there’s no longer any need to load a route beforehand, as the GPS automatically detects the climb you’re on. It’s the Garmin feature most appreciated by competitive cyclists.
Yes: all recent Edge models automatically sync activities to Strava, Garmin Connect, TrainingPeaks, Komoot and other platforms. Syncing takes place via Wi-Fi as soon as you return to a network, or via Bluetooth using the Garmin Connect Mobile app. Strava Live Segments (real-time comparison on favourite Strava segments) are available on the Edge 540 and above.
The Solar versions feature Power Glass photovoltaic cells that extend battery life by capturing solar energy during your ride. The Edge 840 Solar increases its battery life from 26 hours to 32 hours with solar power (up to 60 hours in power-saving mode). The Edge 1040 Solar achieves 35 hours and up to 100 hours in power-saving mode. The benefit is greatest during long summer rides with high sun exposure. In winter or under overcast skies, the gain is significantly reduced.
Yes: all Garmin Edge models are compatible with ANT+ and Bluetooth, allowing you to connect any power meter on the market. Pedal sensors (Favero Assioma, Garmin Rally), crankset sensors (4iiii, Stages, Rotor), freewheel sensors (Power2Max). Connection takes just a few seconds via the pairing procedure in the Garmin settings. Garmin Adaptive Coaching (available on Edge 840+) uses power data to adjust training targets.
Garmin was founded in the United States in 1989 by Gary Burrell and Min Kao, but its headquarters are in Switzerland (Schaffhausen). The main R&D and operational management remain based in the US (Kansas and Oregon). Garmin dominates the sports GPS market with an estimated market share of over 60% in cycling. The brand also covers aviation, marine and sports watches (Fenix, Forerunner).
Via the Garmin Connect Mobile app: import the GPX file into the app, then send it to the device via Bluetooth. Alternative method: connect the Edge to your computer via USB and copy the GPX file into the NewFiles folder. Komoot, RideWithGPS and Strava also allow you to send a route directly to the Edge via Wi-Fi. Once on the device, navigate to the route from the ‘Navigation’ menu.
Yes: all firmware and map updates are free via Garmin Express (PC) or Garmin Connect. Garmin regularly releases updates adding new features (not just bug fixes). New features from the Edge 1040 are regularly ported to the Edge 840 and 540 via these updates. The Garmin Cycle Map (based on OpenStreetMap) is also updated periodically.
The advertised battery life is 26 hours in standard GPS mode, up to 42 hours in power-saving mode. In practice, with maps active, screen backlight and Bluetooth enabled: expect 20–22 hours. For long rides or ultra-distance events, a USB-C external battery pack can recharge the Edge whilst riding. The Edge 840 Solar adds 6 hours of extra battery life during a 5-hour ride in sunny conditions.
Yes, the Garmin Varia (RTL515, RTL516) is compatible with all recent Edge models. The Varia rear radar detects cars up to 140 m away and sends a visual/audible alert to the Edge screen. The built-in flashing light automatically intensifies when a vehicle approaches. The Varia connects via ANT+ and is managed via the Edge’s sensors menu.
