Your choice of crankset directly determines your gear ratios on all types of terrain. The compact (50-34, 110 mm chainline) is the most versatile: suitable for mountain biking, cyclosportives and regular cyclists, it allows you to pair it with an 11-32 cassette to tackle gradients of 12-15%. The semi-compact (52-36) is the well-trained rider’s compromise: offering a longer gear ratio than the compact on the flat, yet still reasonable on climbs. The double standard (53-39, 130 mm chainline) is reserved for powerful competitive riders who do not need low gears. Since 2020, the semi-compact has become the standard on the majority of bikes on the market.
The bottom bracket is the component that connects the crankset to the frame and determines the compatibility of the chosen crankset. The main standards are: threaded BSA (68 mm, the most common on aluminium and steel frames), BB30 (30 mm axle pressed into the frame, lightweight but prone to frequent creaking noises), PF30/PressFit (press-fit bearings without threads, a common carbon standard), and BBright/BB386 EVO (proprietary standards used by certain brands). Before purchasing a crankset, it is essential to check the bottom bracket standard of the frame. An adapter may allow certain modern cranksets to be fitted to a different standard, but the threaded BSA remains the quietest and most reliable solution.
Crank length influences cadence and comfort, not power output directly. Common sizes are 165, 170, 172.5 and 175 mm. The widely used rule of thumb is to choose a length proportional to your inside leg measurement (approximately 10% of your inside leg measurement). Shorter cranks promote a high cadence and reduce strain on the knees, which is particularly recommended for cyclists with sensitive joints or those covering long distances. The recent trend among bike fitters and triathletes is to go down to 165–167.5 mm to promote pedalling agility.
Yes, provided the new chainrings are compatible with the bolt circle diameter and the number of crank arms. For a Shimano 4-arm compact crankset (110 mm bolt circle diameter), chainrings are interchangeable between groupsets (105, Ultegra, Dura-Ace) with the same number of gears. The chainring part number indicates the bolt circle diameter (BCD) and the number of arms. Please note: a compact crankset (110 mm bolt circle diameter) is not compatible with a standard double crankset (130 mm bolt circle diameter). Changing the chainrings alone is a common practice to adapt your gear ratios to specific terrain (e.g. fitting a 34-tooth chainring for mountain riding instead of a 36-tooth one).
For a cyclist covering 5,000 km a year with structured training goals, yes, without hesitation.Crankset sets with an integrated power meter (Shimano with Favero Assioma, SRAM with Quarq, Stages on the left crank) eliminate the need to buy a separate sensor and offer bilateral measurement on high-end models. The extra cost of a Quarq DZero integrated into a SRAM Force AXS is around €500 to €800 compared to the bare groupset. Compare this with the price of a high-end pedal power meter (€800 to €1,200). HollowTech II is the hollow axle technology integrated into Shimano cranksets, not a material. HollowTech II cranksets are made from forged aluminium in the 105 and Ultegra ranges, and from carbon in the Dura-Ace range. The axle is integrated into the right-hand crank and passes through the threaded BSA bottom bracket shell without a bottom bracket cup (the bearings are housed in cups screwed directly into the frame). This design is renowned for its stiffness, quiet operation and long-term reliability. Carbon cranksets (Dura-Ace R9200, SRAM Red, Campagnolo Super Record) offer a weight saving of 100 to 200 g compared to aluminium versions and superior torsional stiffness.
Suitable for even terrain, less so for cyclosportives with steep gradients. The road single-chainring system (SRAM Force 1x12, Campagnolo Ekar) simplifies the drivetrain: no front derailleur, less weight, less maintenance. With a 10-33 or 10-36 cassette, the gear ratios cover a wide range. The downside: the gaps between sprockets are larger than with a double chainring, which can make it difficult to maintain a precise cadence on climbs. For a cyclist riding mainly on flat to moderately undulating terrain or on gravel, the single chainring is an excellent choice. For high mountains or races with frequent accelerations, the double chainring remains superior.
Maintaining the crankset simply involves checking the axle, bearings and for any unusual noises. A rhythmic creaking sound whilst pedalling is often a sign that the bottom bracket needs re-lubrication or replacement, or that a pedal bolt is loose. It is recommended to remove the bottom bracket cups once a year to clean and relubricate them if the bike is used intensively (6,000+ km/year). The bearings in a high-quality threaded BSA bottom bracket (Shimano SM-BB52, Token) last 15,000 to 30,000 km with regular maintenance. Carbon PressFit bottom brackets are more sensitive to water and mud: rinsing them after every wet ride will extend their lifespan.
Not without an adapter, as Campagnolo (Ultra-Torque) and Shimano (HollowTech II) axles are not interchangeable. Campagnolo uses its own Ultra-Torque system (a two-part axle that screws together in the middle of the bottom bracket) with specific bottom bracket cups, even on a 68 mm BSA thread. A threaded BSA frame can accommodate Campagnolo bottom bracket cups, but they are not the same as those for Shimano. Some brands, such as Token, offer universal bottom brackets that allow Campagnolo cranksets to be fitted to BB30 or PressFit frames. If in doubt, consult a specialist bike shop before making a purchase.
The cranks and chainrings of a high-quality crankset can last between 30,000 and 50,000 km if well maintained. Chainrings wear out more quickly: the teeth become asymmetrical after 15,000 to 25,000 km, depending on conditions. A worn chainring causes the chain to skip under load and must be replaced. The bottom bracket is the main wear part of the assembly: its bearings wear out after 10,000 to 20,000 km depending on quality and wet conditions. Creaking noises, noticeable lateral play when pedalling, or rough chain movement are signs that the bottom bracket needs replacing.
