Stabilises the bike during maintenance
52- and 50-tooth chainrings
You may not know it, but Shimano chainrings are largely made of carbon to provide rigidity with limited weight.

The Ultegra FC-R8100 Shimano outer chainring is designed for the Ultegra R8100 2x12-speedShimano crankset. It is the ideal replacement part for restoring fast, precise and smooth front derailleur shifts whilst maintaining the original performance of the drivetrain Shimano.
Developed specifically for the FC-R8100 crankset, this chainring features HOLLOWGLIDE technology. Its hollow structure reduces weight whilst maintaining a high level of stiffness, promoting efficient power transfer and precise chainring changes.
Available in 46, 50 or 52 teeth depending on the crankset configuration, the outer chainring allows a worn component to be replaced without having to change the entire crankset. Shimano offers the 46-36, 50-34 and 52-36-tooth combinations for the FC-R8100.
The Shimano Ultegra FC-R8100 crankset is part of the 12-speed road generation Shimano. It has been designed to optimise stiffness, weight and the quality of gear changes.
The outer chainring is a key component of the system: its shape and tooth profiles directly influence how the chain moves between the small and large chainrings. With HOLLOWGLIDE technology, Shimano uses a hollow structure that reduces weight whilst maintaining high stiffness.
This design helps to ensure fast, precise and smooth front derailleur shifts, particularly when the drivetrain is correctly adjusted.
It is essential that the tooth count matches the configuration of your crankset.
Shimano The FC-R8100 is available in three combinations:
The corresponding outer chainrings are available separately in 46, 50 and 52 teeth, depending on the desired configuration.
The 50-tooth chainring corresponds in particular to the compact 50/34 combination, whilst the 52-tooth chainring is associated with the more performance-oriented 52/36 configuration.
Replacing the outer chainring may be necessary when the teeth show significant wear or when gear changes become less precise despite the derailleur being correctly adjusted.
Using a chainring Shimano designed specifically for the FC-R8100 ensures that the geometry and shift profiles intended for the crankset are maintained.
To maintain optimum performance, it is recommended that you also check the condition of the small chainring, the chain and the cassette. A heavily worn drivetrain may, in fact, require the replacement of several components.
Expert tip: before ordering, you must check the tooth count of your current chainring. A 50-tooth chainring should not be replaced with a 52-tooth one simply because it is compatible with the crankset: changing the chainring combination alters the bike’s gear ratio and may also require the front derailleur to be readjusted.
For a heavily worn drivetrain, we also recommend checking the chain before fitting a new chainring.
Frequently asked questions

Original 12v chainring perfect for the mountains. Very fast delivery. (Translated review)
Yes, it's a good 52 chainring, but the 36 in small chainring is too small. Shimano should consider pairing it with a 38 instead, which would be more normal. The 36 is rarely needed unless perhaps in Italy, but in France it's not justified. (Translated review)
