SMP saddles are designed based on a medical concept: to eliminate all pressure on the perineum by transferring the load solely to the sit bones. Four international patents define their unique design: the central channel free along its entire length, the ‘eagle’s beak’ tip (raised to prevent crushing of the urogenital area even in aggressive positions), the rear recess (protects the coccyx from impact), and the length of the frame (wide range of adjustment). This concept was developed in collaboration with a team of urologists and andrologists. Result: only the ischial tuberosities and the upper part of the ischial tuberosity are in contact with the saddle.

SMP offers 15 saddle models of different widths, based on the distance between the sit bones. How to measure: sitting on a piece of corrugated cardboard, measure the distance between the two marks left by the sit bones. Approximately 100–115 mm: narrow models (Evolution, Dynamic). 115–130 mm: medium models (Stratos, Glider). 130 mm and above: wide models (F20, Well). SMP also provides correspondences by clothing size (XS/S = narrow, M/L = medium, XL/XXL = wide).

The Glider (266x136 mm) is wider than the Stratos (266x131 mm) and offers greater comfort for those with a medium to wide pelvis. The Stratos is the mid-range model between the Evolution (narrower, sportier) and the Glider. Both share the same elastomer padding and the same patented central channel. The Glider is suitable for cyclists with a medium to wide pelvis or for women. The Stratos is designed for narrow to medium pelvises. If you are unsure which to choose, selecting based on your sit bone measurement is more reliable than visual estimates.

Yes: SMP saddles are generally adjusted with a slight forward tilt (-2° to -7°). Unlike conventional saddles set horizontally, the raised nose of SMP saddles creates a false impression of excessive tilt. In practice, a forward tilt of -4 to -5° is often cited as ideal by SMP users. This setting allows the cyclist to rest naturally on their sit bones without sliding forwards. The significant length of the SMP frame also offers a wide range of fore-aft adjustment.

Yes, this is precisely the original aim of SMP saddles: to reduce cycling-related urogenital conditions. The patented central channel eliminates compression of the perineal veins, arteries and capillaries. The eagle-beak tip prevents crushing of the urogenital area regardless of the position adopted. Many urologists recommend SMP saddles as a medical alternative for cyclists suffering from prostate problems, numbness or perineal pain. Please note, however: a saddle that is the wrong width can cause other problems. Measuring your sit bone width remains essential.

No, SMP offers saddles for road cycling, mountain biking, cycle touring, trekking and urban cycling. The Evolution, Glider, Stratos and Dynamic models can be used equally well for road cycling and mountain biking. The Trekking range (Trek Gel, Martin) is designed for cycle touring and long-distance bikepacking. The Fitness range (Martin Fitness) is aimed at exercise bikes and cardio training. SMP also offers women’s saddles with specific dimensions (generally a wider pelvis).

Yes, SMP is an Italian brand based in Castelfranco Veneto (Veneto). Originally founded in 1947 as a saddlery workshop, the brand began developing its patented technical saddles in the 1990s, in partnership with specialist doctors. SMP stands for 'Selle di Marco Pizzighini', named after the founder. All SMP saddles are handmade in Italy, with particular attention paid to the materials (genuine leather for the black versions, Lorica microfibre for the coloured ones).

The SMP frame is longer than average, allowing the saddle to be set well back. This partly compensates for the saddle’s wave-like shape: the cyclist can sit further back or closer to the front depending on their body type and position. When fitting for the first time: start with a neutral fore-aft position and adjust during rides. The usual reference point (knee vertical over the crankset with the axle horizontal) still applies to SMP, but the seating sensation may differ: the raised nose will naturally push you further back than a conventional saddle.

Yes, SMP uses standard 7 mm rails compatible with all conventional seatposts. Premium models feature carbon fibre rails (lighter, better shock absorption). Standard models come with AISI 304 stainless steel rails (robust, corrosion-resistant). Take care with single-clamp carbon seatposts: follow the recommended tightening torques to avoid deforming the carbon rails.

The thickness of the padding and the width of the shell distinguish the sport profiles from the comfort profiles. Sport models (Evolution, Dynamic, Stratos): lightweight padding, narrow to medium shell, designed for performance and regular cycling. Versatile models (Glider, Composit): medium-density elastomer padding, suitable for daily training and cyclosportives. Comfort models (Well, F20, Trek Gel): thicker padding, wider profile, for long rides, bikepacking or cyclists with a wider pelvis.
