Frequently asked questions
After every ride in the rain, after every 3 to 5 dry rides, and always after any ride in freezing conditions or where road salt has been used. Road salt is particularly corrosive to aluminium components (cassette, derailleur) and carbon components (bearings). Mud and abrasives become embedded in the bearings and seals. In practice, a quick clean (rinsing + re-lubricating the chain) in 10 minutes after a wet ride is better than a thorough clean every two weeks. A clean bike is easier to maintain and mechanical problems are detected sooner.
B Bike degreaser or biodegradable cleaner for the drivetrain, a neutral cleaner for the frame, and nothing harsh on carbon.Products to avoid: WD-40 as a lubricant (it is a degreaser that removes lubrication), industrial degreasers that are too harsh and attack the seals, and acetone on carbon, which degrades the resin. Recommended products: Muc-Off Bike Cleaner or Finish Line Speed Clean for the frame and components, Muc-Off or Green Oil to degrease the drivetrain. For the carbon frame: water and mild soap or a specific carbon cleaner (Ceramic Speed).
No, using a high-pressure washer is strongly discouraged as it forces water into the bearings and seals. A jet of water that is too powerful penetrates the wheel, bottom bracket, headset (steering) and derailleur bearings, washing away the grease that protects them. After being hosed down, the bearings will rust within a few rides. Use a low-pressure garden hose with a spray nozzle, or simply a bucket of water and a sponge. Tap water without pressure is more than enough and preserves the longevity of all components.
Start with the drivetrain, then the frame, then the brakes and wheels, and finish by re-lubricating. The logical order: 1. Apply degreaser to the chain, cassette and derailleurs. 2. Leave for 2 minutes. 3. Clean the frame with a neutral cleaner whilst this is taking effect. 4. Rinse the drivetrain with water. 5. Rinse the frame. 6. Dry with a cloth. 7. Re-lubricate the chain. This sequence prevents the frame from being contaminated by degreaser residue from the drivetrain.
A chain cleaner (Park Tool CM-5.3, Pedro’s Chain Pig) with degreaser, followed by rinsing and re-lubrication. These tools clip onto the chain and allow it to be rotated through rollers soaked in degreaser: they clean the links without dismantling. 3 to 5 passes are enough to remove the grime. Then rinse with clean water, dry with a cloth, and relubricate immediately. A well-cleaned chain lasts 30 to 50% longer than a chain that is always dirty.
Isopropyl alcohol on a clean cloth; never use greasy products or soapy water. Brake discs must be clean and completely dry. Isopropyl alcohol (minimum 70%) dissolves oily residues without leaving any residue. Never use WD-40, industrial degreasers or even soap on the friction surface of the discs. If chain oil has splashed onto the disc, clean it immediately: dried-on oil is much harder to remove.
Clean around the bearings to prevent contamination, and lubricate them every 3,000 to 5,000 km. A bike’s bearings are found in the wheels, the bottom bracket, the headset and the derailleurs. They gradually become clogged with moisture and abrasive particles. Signs of a worn bearing include noticeable side play (the wheel wobbles from side to side), increased rolling resistance or a squeaking noise. Maintenance: at least once a year, remove any accessible bearings, clean them with petrol, re-grease them with hub grease and reassemble.
Chain brush, sponge or microfibre cloth, degreaser, neutral cleaner and lubricant: five essentials. The chain brush (a small used toothbrush or a specialist Park Tool brush) cleans between the cassette sprockets and the derailleurs. The sponge for the frame and rims. The biodegradable degreaser for the drivetrain. The neutral cleaner for the frame. The chain lubricant suited to the conditions (dry or wet). These five items provide a complete maintenance kit. Useful extras: chain cleaner, microfibre cloths and a wheel brush.
Thorough cleaning, application of protective lubricant to metal parts, protection of friction points and general lubrication. At the start of winter: give the bike a thorough clean, inspect and replace worn cables and housings, lubricate all friction points (derailleurs, pivots), apply an anti-corrosion lubricant (ACF50, Finish Line Cera Lube) to the cassette, derailleurs and axles. On aluminium frames, check the metal/carbon contact areas. After every winter ride in salty conditions: rinse and re-lubricate the chain.
Yes, for regular use, although it may take slightly longer to work on stubborn grime. Modern biodegradable cleaners (Muc-Off Bio, Green Oil) use natural surfactants that effectively remove everyday dirt. For heavily soiled drivetrains, a slightly longer application time (3 to 5 minutes instead of 1 to 2 minutes) may be required. Their advantages: they are safe for the environment, less harsh on seals and paintwork, and non-irritating to the skin. Some are also effective for cleaning water bottles and panniers.
