Frequently asked questions

Want to find out more?

A carbon sole maximises power transfer, whilst a composite sole offers greater comfort over long distances. A 100% carbon sole (stiffness rating 8 to 12/12) does not flex when pedalling: all muscular energy is transferred directly to the pedal. This is the choice for cyclists undertaking intense efforts, cyclosportives or competitive racing. The composite sole (nylon, fibreglass, polyamide, stiffness 5 to 7/12) absorbs power slightly but offers greater comfort on long rides, especially for sensitive feet. For a cyclist covering 3,000 km a year on moderate rides, the composite sole is more than adequate. For over 6,000 km a year with performance goals, carbon is the better choice.

BOA is the go-to system for competitive cycling, Velcro for practicality, and laces for a vintage look. The BOA (dial + cable) tightens evenly across the entire forefoot in a quarter-turn, is easy to adjust whilst riding, and offers the best support. It is found on the majority of mid-range and high-end shoes. Velcro straps are simple, sturdy and economical, but can lose grip in damp conditions and stretch over time. The combination of Velcro and a micrometric buckle is a good compromise. Laces provide a secure fit along the entire length of the foot but cannot be readjusted whilst riding. For long rides in hot weather when feet swell, the BOA system with its instant micro-adjustment is unbeatable.

Generally, go for half a size to a full size larger than your everyday shoe size. Your feet swell significantly after 2 to 3 hours of exercise, especially in hot weather. A shoe that’s too tight compresses the tendons and causes tingling, or even pain in the toes. Each brand has its own sizing: Shimano and Fizik tend to have narrower fits, whilst Sidi and Lake are generally wider. Try the shoes on at the end of the day with your usual cycling socks. Your foot should be able to move very slightly inside the shoe without touching the front of the sole. If your toes are hitting the front of the shoe after 3 hours of cycling, this is the first sign that the size is too small.

Road shoes with a 3-hole sole are compatible with Look Kéo, Shimano SPD-SL, Time and Speedplay. These four systems share the 3-hole pattern derived from the Look standard, with slightly different geometries depending on the brand. Road shoes are, however, not compatible with 2-hole SPD pedals (MTB) without an adapter. For cyclists wishing to walk between rides, Look-compatible cleat adapters that allow for proper walking are available (Shimano SM-SH45, SPD-SL Cleat Cover). The real alternative: gravel shoes with a 2-hole sole, SPD-compatible and allowing for walking.

For riding in temperatures below 5°C, thermal shoes or shoe covers are essential. Standard road shoes are highly ventilated by design: their openings let cold air through, which quickly causes numbness. The solutions are: waterproof shoe covers (neoprene or Gore-Tex) over your usual shoes, or specific winter shoes with a thermal sole and waterproof upper (Shimano MW7, Fizik Arctis). For temperatures between 5 and 12°C, lightweight shoe covers are sufficient. Below 0°C, only dedicated winter shoes or thermal ankle boots will allow you to ride without discomfort.

With normal care, 3 to 6 years for a quality pair, or 15,000 to 40,000 km.The carbon sole does not wear out; it is the upper (upper, Velcro straps, BOA system) and the insole that deteriorate over time due to sweat and moisture. BOA systems are repairable: the cables and dials can be replaced separately (Boa Technology provides free replacement kits on their website). The Velcro straps become dirty and lose their grip after 2 to 3 years; regular cleaning prolongs their effectiveness. Signs that a shoe needs replacing: the insole has flattened, the upper is misshapen or no longer supports the foot.

Yes, but shoes used intensively on a home trainer wear out faster. Indoor sessions generate significant perspiration, which saturates the foam and attacks the adhesives in the sole. Many cyclists keep a pair dedicated to the home trainer (an old pair or a cheaper model) to preserve their outdoor shoes. If you use a single pair, rinse the inner lining with lukewarm water after each intensive session and leave to air dry; never in direct sunlight or near a heat source.

Cleat positioning has the greatest impact on knee health and performance. Starting point: centre the cleat so that the pedal’s axis is exactly beneath the head of the first metatarsal (the bump beneath the big toe joint). Sideways, the cleat should be positioned so that the knee moves straight up, without varus or valgus. Fine-tuning is done on the road: if the knee pulls inwards or outwards, move the cleat sideways. Never make this adjustment on your own: a friend watching from behind, or better still, a professional bike-fitting specialist, will ensure an accurate result. An incorrect cleat adjustment left uncorrected over 3,000 km can lead to tendonitis and joint pain.

Between €100 and €200 offers the best value for money in terms of quality, performance and durability for a cyclist covering 3,000 to 8,000 km per year. Below €80, the soles are made of flexible composite material and the fastening systems are not very precise: acceptable for beginners. Between €100 and €200, you get access to rigid composite or partial carbon soles, BOA fastenings and a high-quality fit (Shimano RC502 at €150, Fizik Tempo at €160). Above €250, full carbon and dual BOA fastenings appear, offering marginal gains unless used for intensive competitive riding. For difficult feet (wide, high-arched, flat), investing in a higher-end range is always worthwhile: comfort is a factor in performance.

Yes, and this is one of the most common problems among regular cyclists. Tingling in the forefoot: caused by a shoe that is too tight or a sole that is too stiff, compressing the metatarsals. Solution: loosen the laces slightly partway through your ride or change to a different size. Heel pain: often caused by poor cleat positioning, which exerts pressure differently depending on the cyclist. Blisters or pressure points: direct contact between a hard part of the shoe and the foot. Solution: custom insoles (Specialized BG, SuperFeet) that support the arch and distribute pressure. In the event of persistent pain, a podiatric assessment and a postural analysis can help identify the actual cause.
