Gel, cork and certain polyurethane synthetics are the most comfortable materials; microfibre and synthetic leather offer the best grip. Gel tape (Fizik Superlight, BBB BHT-01) absorbs vibrations well thanks to the integrated gel insert, ideal for rides of 3 hours or more. Natural cork is comfortable and breathable but wears out more quickly. Dense polyurethane tapes (Fizik Endurance, Cinelli Gel) offer an excellent balance between shock absorption and durability. Microfibres (Deda Tape Crosta) offer the best resistance to moisture and sweat, with a very secure grip.
2.5 mm is the standard for comfort and performance; 3 mm for maximum comfort or long distances; less than 2 mm for aggressive racing positions. The thickness affects the final grip diameter of the handlebar: thick tape slightly reduces the diameter of the hand grip, which some cyclists with small hands appreciate. In competition, thin tape (1.8–2 mm) allows for a more direct and precise grip on the drop bars and the lower part of the drop. For a cyclist who suffers from wrist pain or vibrations, switching to 3 mm tape with a gel insert can make a real difference on long rides.
Start at the bottom of the horn, leaving the tape to overlap by about 2 cm, work your way up, overlapping by a third with each turn, and pull gently to tighten without tearing.The direction of wrapping is crucial: wrap clockwise on the left-hand side and anti-clockwise on the right-hand side, so that the hand gripping the handlebar with its fingers spread apart tightens the tape rather than peeling it off. Maintain constant, even tension throughout the application. In areas with bulges, the wraps around the hull require extra care to avoid creating creases.
Only if the supplied tape is not self-adhesive, which is rare with modern tapes. Most modern tapes have an adhesive backing along their entire length. This backing adheres lightly to the handlebar and holds the tape in place during fitting, but the final secure hold is provided by the finishing tape at the bottom of the drop and around the centre. The extra double-sided tape is useful for the drop-out areas where the tape needs to be secure around the frame. If using cork tape or non-adhesive recycled tape, apply double-sided tape along the entire length of the handlebar before fitting the tape.
There is no difference in performance based on colour, but white or light-coloured tape shows dirt more easily and requires more maintenance. Light-coloured tape needs to be cleaned more regularly with a damp, lightly soapy cloth to maintain its appearance. Charcoal or black tape hides dirt better and is suitable for cyclists who don’t want to worry about it. In terms of performance, the colour has no impact. Some high-end tapes feature fluorescent under-colours that become visible as the tape wears, acting as an indicator: when the inner colour appears, it’s time to replace it.
Start at the centre end, gently unroll by pulling forwards, and use a cloth soaked in alcohol to remove any adhesive residue. Never use a blade or sharp object on a carbon handlebar, as this could cause scratches. For very sticky tape (old gel tape), gently heating it with a hairdryer held at a distance softens the adhesive and makes it easier to peel off. Residues of double-sided tape can be removed with isopropyl alcohol or Goo Gone (available from bike shops). After cleaning, inspect the handlebar for any scratches or cracks before fitting new tape.
6 to 12 months with regular use (3,000 to 5,000 km/year), more frequently if rides are undertaken in wet weather. The tape wears out due to abrasion from gloves, moisture from sweat and UV rays. It’s time to change it when the tape starts to peel, loses its grip, cracks or has smooth patches with no grip. Worn-out tape reduces comfort and can unroll mid-ride, which is dangerous. Changing your handlebar tape is one of the cheapest bike maintenance jobs (€5 to €30 depending on the model) and instantly gives your bike a fresh new look.
Wind tunnel tests show gains of 1 to 3 watts at 45 km/h, which are only relevant for top-level competition. Certain tapes (Fizik Bar Tape Tempo, Lizard Skins DSP), thanks to their smooth texture and slim profile, reduce drag around the handlebars. These gains are measurable but negligible for the amateur cyclist who does not exceed 40 km/h over long distances. On the other hand, they often have the drawback of reduced grip when hands are wet. For the majority of cyclists, comfort and grip take precedence over the aerodynamic gains offered by the tape.
No, in practice, as the adhesive loses its effectiveness and the tape has become distorted through use.Even if removed with care, used tape cannot be reused satisfactorily: the adhesive is partially saturated, the tape has taken the shape of the handlebars and shows uneven stretching. A new tape costs so little (€5 to €15) that reusing it makes no practical sense. However, if the tape is removed for maintenance and is virtually new (less than 500 km), it can be temporarily reattached with a few extra turns of tape whilst awaiting a proper replacement.
Natural cork is more breathable and comfortable but wears out faster; synthetic (EVA, microfibre) is more durable and water-repellent. Cork tape (Fizik Cork, Cinelli Gel) offers a pleasant, natural feel and absorbs sweat well. It deteriorates more quickly when exposed to UV light and moisture, and the edges fray after 1 to 2 seasons. Modern synthetic tape (polyurethane, microfibre) is more resistant to the elements, stays clean for longer and is often easier to fit without bubbles. For cyclists who ride in all weathers, water-repellent synthetic tape is more practical.
