The saddle width should correspond to the distance between your sit bones (ischial tuberosities), plus 20 to 30 mm. The sit bones are the two pelvic bones that bear your weight when seated. A cyclist with a 100 mm distance between the sit bones should choose a saddle 120 to 130 mm wide for a sporty, forward-leaning position. For a more upright position (hybrid bikes, cycle touring), add an extra 10 to 15 mm. The measurement can be easily taken at home using a piece of slightly soft cardboard: sit on it and measure the imprint of the two contact points. Many bike shops offer this service free of charge. A saddle that is too narrow compresses the sit bones, whilst one that is too wide rubs against the thighs.
For road cycling in a racing position, a flat or slightly curved saddle is best suited. In the road position (upper body leaning at 30–45°), the pelvis tilts forwards and the contact points shift to the front of the sit bones. A flat saddle allows maximum freedom of movement and reduces thigh chafing. The semi-rounded saddle is suitable for cyclists who alternate positions (out of the saddle, on the lower part of the handlebars, standing). The rounded saddle is more suited to upright positions (hybrid, city bikes). Length is also a factor: short saddles (less than 250 mm) offer more freedom when standing, whilst long saddles allow you to vary your position throughout a ride.
The central channel or cut-out is designed to reduce pressure on the pudendal nerve and the soft tissues of the perineum. In a prolonged aerodynamic position, the nose of the saddle can compress arteries and nerves, causing numbness, tingling or genital pain. A central channel distributes this pressure to the sides. A full cut-out (as on the Selle Italia Flite Boost or the Specialized Power) eliminates all pressure in the central area. This type of saddle is not suitable for everyone: some cyclists with a narrow pelvis find it uncomfortable as all the weight rests on the sit bones. It is essential to try it out on several rides before making a purchase.
The material of the rails influences the saddle’s weight, flexibility and comfort. Steel rails (entry-level) are heavy but indestructible, and compatible with all seatpost clamps. Aluminium rails (mid-range) offer a good balance of weight, price and strength, with a round cross-section compatible with all seatposts. Titanium rails combine lightness with a slight natural flexibility that filters out vibrations, making them popular for long distances. Carbon rails are the lightest but require a compatible seatpost clamp (oval cross-section) and do not tolerate excessive tightening: a precise tightening torque (using a torque wrench) is essential.
Yes, and three adjustments are sufficient in the vast majority of cases. Saddle height is the most critical: leg almost fully extended at the bottom of the pedal stroke (heel resting on the pedal), knee with 25 to 30° of residual flexion in the normal position. Forward position: the knee should be vertically aligned above the pedal axle at the 3 o’clock position, which can be measured using a plumb line. The angle: horizontal as a starting point, to be adjusted slightly downwards if there is pain in the front of the saddle, and upwards if there is forward slippage. These basic adjustments resolve 80% of comfort issues. For persistent cases, a professional postural assessment is recommended.
A slight discomfort during the first 3 to 5 rides is normal; real pain from the very first hour is not. The skin and tissues gradually get used to the pressure of a new saddle, especially if the old one was more padded. The break-in period varies from 2 to 4 weeks for a correctly chosen saddle. However, if the pain is severe, localised under the sit bones, or if sores appear, the saddle is not suited to your body shape. A good-quality pair of cycling shorts with a suitable chamois pad and chamois cream reduce friction and help you feel more comfortable on a new saddle.
The weight saving is real but should not take precedence over comfort. A top-of-the-range carbon saddle (Selle Italia SLR, Fizik Arione R1) weighs 100 to 140 g, compared to 200 to 280 g for a mid-range saddle. That’s a saving of 100 to 180 g in a place where the weight doesn’t really matter. For a cyclist covering 5,000 km a year who takes part in cyclosportives or endurance rides, this saving is marginal. The classic mistake: choosing an ultra-lightweight and uncomfortable saddle. A mid-range saddle (150–200 g) that is perfectly suited to your body shape will always be better than a top-of-the-range saddle that causes discomfort.
Not necessarily, but often beneficial. The female pelvis is generally wider (with the sit bones further apart) and flexibility in the lower back is often greater, which promotes a more pronounced anterior tilt of the pelvis. These characteristics suggest slightly wider saddles (130 to 145 mm compared to 120 to 135 mm for men), with a central channel to relieve pressure on the soft tissues specifically affected in this position. Many brands (Fizik, Selle Italia, Specialized) offer women’s ranges with tailored specifications. A male cyclist with a wide, flexible pelvis can certainly benefit from using a so-called women’s saddle.
Protecting the cover and preventing prolonged exposure to moisture significantly extends its lifespan. The cover (outer layer), whether made of synthetic material or imitation leather, deteriorates when exposed to prolonged moisture and repeated perspiration without protection. After every ride in wet conditions, wipe the saddle dry and leave it to air dry. A waterproofing spray applied every 2 to 3 months preserves the cover’s properties. The rails should be lightly lubricated at the carriage to prevent corrosion. Genuine leather saddles (Brooks, Selle Anatomica) require specific care: Proofide or leather oil every 3 to 6 months to prevent drying out.
Three characteristic symptoms indicate an unsuitable saddle height. Saddle too low: the knee does not fully extend, pain and inflammation on the front of the knee (patellar tendon), noticeable loss of power when accelerating. Saddle too high: the pelvis sways from side to side with each pedal stroke, pain behind the knee (popliteal tendon), risk of Achilles tendon injury. The practical rule: heel resting on the pedal at the lowest point, leg straight without the pelvis rolling. In the 12 o’clock pedal position, the knee should have 25 to 30° of residual flexion as measured by a goniometer.
