The SRAM XX1 AXS mountain bike groupset is a wireless drivetrain that uses encrypted technology already employed by SRAM on its eTap road groupsets. ANT+ and Bluetooth systems are also connectivity options for the AXS, not to mention the mobile app (available for iOS and Android) which allows you to customise the rear derailleur’s behaviour and operation to suit your preferences.
The new shifter lever is more ergonomic and thus allows for greater precision when changing gears, even on technical and demanding sections.
When used on a mountain bike, the battery attached to the rear derailleur has a running time of 20–25 hours, depending on usage. The derailleur shifter is powered by a CR2032 battery. Its lifespan is stated as between one and two years, and changing the battery is easy via a small access panel on the shifter.
Checking the battery charge level is very simple. When the system is switched on, an indicator light comes on; when it is green, the charge is optimal; when it turns red, this means the charge level is 50%; and when it starts flashing red, it is advisable to recharge to make the most of your next ride. The battery is very easy to remove and recharges in just a few minutes – a far cry from the 4-hour charge time of an e-MTB battery!
Assembling the AXS system is very simple: just mount the rear derailleur on the frame, adjust the traditional high and low limit stops, attach the shifter to the handlebars... and switch on the system – everything is ready to go!
