A double-sided SPD pedal designed for mountain biking and gravel riding

The main feature of theShimano PD-ME700 is their automatic SPD mechanism, accessible from both sides. Unlike a single-sided pedal, there is therefore no need to find the correct orientation before clipping in.

This design is particularly useful for mountain biking, especially on technical sections where you may need to unclip quickly and then clip back in when exiting a bend, after negotiating an obstacle or when accelerating out of a corner.

Shimano ’s SPD system uses cleats recessed into the sole of the shoes. This design is particularly well-suited to off-road riding as it also makes walking easier in SPD-compatible mountain bike shoes.

A wide platform for greater stability

Shimano has equipped the PD-ME700 with a wider platform surrounding the automatic mechanism.

This additional surface area increases contact between the shoe and the pedal and helps to improve stability as well as power transfer. It is particularly useful on uneven terrain and when the bike is subjected to significant movement.

The cage also provides protection: it surrounds the SPD mechanism and helps to shield it from impacts that may occur during off-road use.

An effective pedal even when not clipped in

One of the advantages of the PD-ME700 is its ability to maintain a good level of control when the foot is not clipped into the SPD mechanism.

The integrated cage provides a larger contact surface than a conventional compact SPD pedal. It therefore offers added safety when the cyclist needs to ride temporarily without being clipped in.

This feature is particularly useful for technical mountain biking, challenging gravel riding or when learning to use clipless pedals.

SPD tension adjustment

The engagement and release tension is adjustable. This allows the cyclist to adjust the force required to clip in or out of the pedal.

A relatively loose setting is recommended for beginners to make unclipping easier. Experienced riders can gradually increase the tension to achieve a firmer, more secure hold.

The adjustment is made directly on the mechanism using a suitable spanner. Shimano thus offers simple customisation to suit the cyclist’s preferences.

Chromoly axle and sealed bearings

The PD-ME700 features a chromoly steel axle, a material renowned for its mechanical strength and durability.

The axle is combined with a sealed cartridge bearing system designed to minimise the ingress of dust and moisture. This design helps to reduce the need for maintenance and ensures smooth operation over time.

As with all MTB pedals, cleaning after particularly muddy rides and regular checks of the pedals’ operation are recommended.

Pedal options suitable for gravel riding

The PD-ME700s are also an excellent choice for gravel riding.

Their dual SPD mechanism makes repeated clipping in easier, and their relatively wide platform provides extra stability compared to a small clipless pedal designed exclusively for XC.

The system is particularly well-suited to gravel adventure riding , bikepacking and mixed road/trail rides, where durability and ease of use are priorities.

Specialised tests have notably assessed the PD-ME700 on routes combining secondary roads, gravel tracks and singletrack, with positive feedback on their ease of adjustment, robustness and versatility.

Shimano SM-SH51 cleats included

The pedals are supplied with a pair of Shimano SM-SH51 cleats.

These cleats are designed for shoes compatible with the Shimano SPD two-screw system. They allow you to benefit from the automatic mechanism whilst still being able to walk relatively easily in MTB shoes fitted with recessed cleats.

The SM-SH51 features a one-way release mechanism: the usual action involves pivoting the heel outwards to release the shoe.

Our advice: for versatile gravel/MTB use, start with a moderate release tension, then increase it gradually if you’re looking for a firmer hold.
