Notre avis

The new benchmark for Shimano pedals. The PD-R9100 is the lightest and most efficient pedal ever created. Its 4mm longer axle offers a wider range of adjustment.

Shimano Dura-Ace SPD-SL clipless pedals for road performance

The Shimano Dura-Ace PD-R9100 IPDR9100E1 are top-of-the-range clipless pedals designed for road cycling, shown here in the version fitted with a 4 mm extended axle and supplied with SPD-SL SM-SH12 cleats. They combine a carbon composite body, a wide contact surface and a system of widely spaced bearings to offer an excellent balance between stiffness, stability and power transfer.

The +4 mm version is particularly appealing to cyclists seeking a foot position slightly further away from the crank, particularly due to body shape or specific leg alignment requirements. Shimano officially offers this additional axle length on the PD-R9100.

Key features of the Shimano Dura-Ace PD-R9100E1

  • Extra-wide platform
  • Wide-spaced bearings
  • Adjustable engagement and release tension

  • Approximate weight of the long-axle version: approximately 246 g per pair according to the technical data sheet Shimano.

A Dura-Ace pedal designed for performance

The PD-R9100 is the top-of-the-range pedal in the Dura-Ace R9100 generation. Shimano has sought to strike a balance between low weight and stiffness, with a wide platform designed to improve foot stability and power transfer.

The moulded carbon composite body helps to keep the weight down whilst maintaining excellent stiffness. The extra-wide platform provides a large contact area beneath the shoe, which promotes efficient power transfer during sprints, climbs or high-intensity training sessions.

4 mm longer axle: who is it for?

The distinctive feature of this IPDR9100E1 version is its axle, which is 4 mm longer than that of the standard model.

This difference may be of interest to cyclists who need to slightly increase the distance between their feet. In particular, it can help improve leg alignment for some riders with a specific body type or wider hips.

Shimano officially confirms the existence of two axle lengths for the PD-R9100: standard and +4 mm.

Tip: the +4 mm axle is not automatically an improvement for every cyclist. If your current riding position suits you perfectly, the standard model may be preferable. The longer axle is particularly useful when it meets a specific positioning need.

A wide platform to optimise power transfer

The PD-R9100’s platform is deliberately wide to improve the stability of the shoe on the pedal. ‘ Shimano ’ combines this large contact area with more widely spaced bearings, allowing for better load distribution.

This design is particularly beneficial during sustained efforts, when the cyclist exerts strong pressure on the pedals.

The SPD-SL system has also been specifically developed for Shimano road cycling shoes and is designed to promote efficient power transfer between the shoe and the pedal.

Shimano SM-SH12 cleats included

The pair comes with Shimano SM-SH12 cleats, recognisable by their blue colour.

The SM-SH12 is an SPD-SL cleat with a front-mounted pivot, offering approximately 2° of pivot freedom. It therefore sits between the SM-SH10, which is more rigid, and the SM-SH11, which offers greater angular freedom.

This controlled freedom allows the foot to make a slight, natural movement around the axis whilst maintaining a precise connection with the pedal.

Adjusting the engagement tension

The PD-R9100’s mechanism allows the engagement and release tension to be adjusted. This enables the cyclist to tailor the mechanism’s resistance to their preferences and riding ability.

When using clipless pedals for the first time, it is generally best to start with a moderate engagement tension to make it easier to release the foot.

Experienced cyclists can then gradually increase the tension if they are looking for a firmer hold.

A pedal suited to competition and training

With its light weight, rigidity and large platform, the PD-R9100 is particularly well-suited to cyclists seeking high-performance equipment for:

  • road racing;
  • cyclosport;
  • long rides;
  • triathlons;
  • intensive training;
  • climbs and mountainous routes;
  • the pursuit of pedalling efficiency.

Shimano In fact, it presents the PD-R9100 as a pedal designed for demanding road cyclists, particularly competitors and triathletes.

Frequently asked questions

Want to find out more?
