Based on the number of kilometres travelled
A bike chain stretches over time with use, which is called "stretching".
This phenomenon causes poor power transmission and accelerated wear on the sprockets and chainrings.
A chain is considered worn when it has stretched by more than 1%, which can occur after approximately 2,500 km, depending on maintenance and riding conditions.
There are two methods for checking wear:
• With a wear tester: a special tool that is inserted into the chain and directly indicates the degree of wear.
• By hand: by pulling on a link on the large chainring. If the chain comes off the teeth clearly (more than half of a tooth visible), this is a sign that the chain is worn.
Estimate the wear on the plate
Based on visual criteria
The plates wear out over time due to repeated action of the chain.
A worn chainring has thinner teeth, which are often pointed or even hook-shaped or "shark teeth".
This causes the chain to jump, make a grinding noise or transmit power inefficiently.
A chainring in good condition has thick, symmetrical teeth.
It is important to replace a chain before it irreparably damages the chainrings.
Estimate cassette wear
Based on visual criteria
It wears more slowly than the chain, but its wear is greatly accelerated by a worn chain.
A cassette can last 7,000 to 8,000 km, or even more if well maintained.
A worn cassette can be recognised by its thin or wave-shaped teeth.
You may also notice unusual noise or chain skipping even with a new chain.
Estimate the wear on the bottom bracket
Based on sound criteria
With wear, the housing may produce creaking noises, lateral play or a "floating" feeling when pedalling.
A housing in good condition is quiet and free of play, even after several thousand kilometres.
It is difficult to diagnose wear visually: the feel while riding and mechanical noises are the best indicators.
Assessing brake system wear
Based on visual criteria
On drum brakes, the wear indicators are often visible directly (small notches or grooves on the brake shoe).
On disc brakes, the pads must be replaced before they reach the metal lining.
Metallic noises, less effective braking or a very long lever stroke indicate that replacement is necessary.
A well-maintained system remains effective even after several thousand kilometres.

Tyres wear out over time and with mileage, especially at the rear.
On many models, a wear indicator (small circular indentation) allows you to see how worn the tyres are. A worn tyre also has a flat spot (smooth area), cracks or sometimes the carcass is visible.
