The Shimano SLX BL-M7100 – IBLM7100R right-hand brake lever is a high-performance hydraulic brake lever designed for mountain biking, particularly cross-country, trail riding and demanding off-road riding. Thanks to its optimised design, the BL-M7100 provides progressive and precise braking whilst improving the stiffness of the handlebar area. Shimano has, in particular, worked on the position of the lever’s pivot and added an extra contact point to achieve a more stable and intuitive operation.

The part number IBLM7100R refers to the right-hand lever, designed to control either the rear or front brake depending on the bike’s configuration and the hose routing. It is an ideal component for replacing a damaged Shimano SLX BL-M7100 lever or for creating a bespoke build.

An SLX lever designed for mountain biking

The BL-M7100 has been developed to offer precise braking control whilst maintaining an easy-to-operate lever. Its two-finger ergonomics allow you to maintain good control of the handlebars during braking, even when the terrain becomes technical.

The optimised position of the lever axis and the additional contact point help to improve stiffness and feedback from the lever. Shimano also claims a 10 per cent increase in stiffness compared to the BL-M7000, particularly as temperatures rise.

This design makes the BL-M7100 particularly appealing to XC, trail and competitive mountain bikers seeking precise control without having to upgrade to a higher-end range.

SERVO WAVE ACTION technology

The Shimano SLX BL-M7100 brake lever features SERVO WAVE ACTION technology.

During the initial part of the lever’s travel, the brake pads move rapidly towards the disc. Once contact is made, the system increases the leverage ratio to provide greater braking power with better control over the lever’s travel.

This technology thus delivers a response that is both responsive and progressive – two characteristics that are particularly valuable on mountain bikes.

Tool-free reach adjustment

The BL-M7100 features a Reach Adjust system that allows you to adjust the distance between the handlebar grip and the lever.

This adjustment allows the lever position to be tailored to the size of the hand, the rider’s preferences and the type of riding. Shimano notes that this adjustment can be made without tools, making it easier to fine-tune the handlebar set-up.

Correct adjustment ensures, in particular, that the index finger remains in a comfortable position on the lever whilst minimising unnecessary hand movement.

I-SPEC EV: a cleaner handlebar setup

The BL-M7100 lever utilises I-SPEC EV technology, which allows the brake lever to be paired with a compatible Shimano gear shifter.

This design offers greater flexibility in adjusting the position of the controls and helps to create a cleaner, more ergonomic cockpit. Shimano specifies a 20° adjustment range for the gear shifter position on the BL-M7100.

For set-ups fitted with a compatible Shimano drivetrain, this integration allows the shifter position to be better tailored to the rider’s preferences.

Compatibility with brake calipers Shimano

The BL-M7100 is designed to work with compatible Shimano hydraulic braking systems. Shimano specifically recommends pairing it with the following calipers:

• BR-M7110-R;
• BR-M7120.

The BL-M7100 can therefore be used with a BR-M7100 SLX 2-piston brake calliper or with the BR-M7120 4-piston calliper, depending on the configuration specified by Shimano.

The system uses Shimano mineral oil, and the lever is designed for bleeding using a funnel.

Our advice: before ordering a lever on its own, please check carefully that your caliper, hose and gear shifter are compatible. The BL-M7100, in particular, uses a specific configuration Shimano with I-SPEC EV and mineral oil Shimano.

For an identical replacement, also check that your current lever is indeed marked with the part number BL-M7100.
