The small Shimano Ultegra FC-R8000 chainring is the inner chainring for the Ultegra R8000Shimano , designed for 2x11-speed road bike drivetrains. It features an optimised design to ensure fast, precise and smooth chainring changes when used in combination with the corresponding large chainring.
Depending on the crankset combination, the small chainring is available with 34, 36 or 39 teeth. Shimano lists the 50/34T, 52/36T, 53/39T and 46/36T configurations for the FC-R8000, amongst others.
The choice of the small chainring directly influences the bike’s gear ratio.
The 50/34T combination is particularly versatile. It is ideal for cyclists looking for an easy gear ratio for climbs, hilly routes or long rides.
In a 52/36T setup, the 36-tooth chainring offers an excellent compromise for competitive cycling. It provides a slightly higher gear ratio than the 34-tooth chainring whilst retaining good climbing performance.
The 53/39T configuration is geared more towards sporty, fast riding. It is particularly suitable for cyclists who prefer fast, rolling routes and speed.
Shimano confirms these various combinations for the FC-R8000.
The inner chainring works in conjunction with the large chainring to facilitate the chain’s transition from one chainring to the other. It is therefore preferable to use the chainring combination specified by Shimano rather than pairing chainrings at random.
The FC-R8000 crankset features a 4-arm design with a 110 mm bolt circle diameter. Shimano also specifies a chainline of 43.5 mm.
Replacing the small chainring can help extend the lifespan of an Ultegra R8000 crankset when the teeth show significant wear, without having to replace the entire crankset.
Before replacing it, however, it is advisable to also check the condition of the large chainring and the chain. A heavily worn chain can accelerate wear on a new chainring.

Pas systématiquement. En revanche, si la chaîne est fortement usée, son remplacement est recommandé afin d'éviter qu'elle n'accélère l'usure du nouveau plateau.
