Shimano Deore BR-T610 V-brake for mountain bikes and trekking bikes

The Deore BR-T610Shimano is a mechanical V-Brake caliper designed for mountain bikes, trekking bikes and touring bikes fitted with a rim brake system. Part of the Deore ‘Shimano ’ range, it combines an aluminium construction, a robust design and an adjustment system that ensures effective and easily controllable braking.

With a 107 mm arch, the BR-T610 is designed for standard V-brake set-ups. Shimano lists S70C, M70CT4 and S70T brake pads, depending on the chosen configuration. The caliper also features cartridge-style pad holders, making it easy to replace the pads without having to replace the entire pad holder assembly.

The BR-T610 is available in black or silver, depending on the version. Shimano lists, in particular, the BR-T610-L version in black and the BR-T610-S version in silver.

A versatile Deore V-Brake for mountain biking and trekking

The BR-T610 was designed as part of the Deore range, intended specifically for mountain biking and trekking. At the time, Shimano paired it with the BL-T610 brake levers, along with the SM-PM70 brake power modulator, in the configurations specified by the manufacturer.

Its V-brake design offers simple, user-friendly operation and is easy to maintain. It is a particularly attractive solution for bikes that do not have a disc brake system and whose frame and fork are fitted with V-brake mounts.

Easy-to-replace cartridge brake pads

One of the advantages of the BR-T610 is its cartridge-style brake pad system. When the pads are worn, it is possible to replace the specific brake components without necessarily having to change the entire caliper.

Shimano Notable examples include the S70C and M70CT4 brake pads for the BR-T610, as well as the optional S70T.

This design allows you to keep the brake caliper whilst regularly replacing the consumables, which is a significant advantage for the long-term maintenance of the bike.

Adjustment and installation

The BR-T610 features screws that allow you to adjust the spring tension on either side of the caliper. This adjustment ensures that both arms are correctly centred and that movement is balanced when the lever is operated.

When fitting or replacing a V-brake, it is important to check:

1. Whether the frame or fork is compatible with a V-brake caliper.
2. That both arms are correctly positioned on the brake mounts.
3. That the brake pads are aligned with the braking surface of the rim.
4. The distance between the brake pads and the rim.
5. That the cable and cable housing are routed correctly.
6. The correct return of the arms after releasing the lever.

After any work on the brakes, you must carry out a full check of the brake’s operation before setting off again.

The Deore BR-T610Shimano remains an excellent choice for refurbishing a mountain bike, a trekking bike or a touring bike fitted with V-brakes. Its aluminium construction and cartridge-style brake pad holder make it a brake caliper that is both easy to maintain and suitable for regular use.

Its 107 mm arch is an important specification to check before purchase: the BR-T610 is designed for a standard V-brake fitment and must match the bike’s geometry. It is therefore not a universal caliper designed to replace just any rim brake system.

When refurbishing your bike, we recommend replacing the brake pads at the same time if they show significant wear, and checking the condition of the cables and cable housings. Even an excellent brake caliper will not perform to its full potential with a seized cable or a damaged cable housing.

Our advice: if your bike is already fitted with Shimano Deore BL-T610 levers, this combination works particularly well, as Shimano lists the BL-T610 as a V-Brake lever from the same generation.
