From 203 to 140 mm, external clamping nut
Rider Elite XC for 5 years
Shimano ’s Deore XT SM-RT86 Ice Technologies MTB brake disc is designed to deliver powerful, progressive and consistent braking, even under intense use. Aimed at discerning mountain bikers, it features a high-end design combining lightness, heat resistance and reliability.
Thanks to Shimano ’s Ice Technologies, the SM-RT86 features a three-layer sandwich construction comprising two outer layers of stainless steel and a central aluminium core. This architecture significantly improves the dissipation of heat generated during braking and limits the system’s temperature rise.
This improved thermal management helps maintain consistent braking performance, particularly during long, technical descents, repeated braking manoeuvres and demanding mountain rides. It also helps to minimise the loss of braking efficiency caused by overheating, whilst reducing noise and pad wear.
Shimano XT SM-RT86 disc also features an optimised design to facilitate the removal of mud and debris. It thus ensures reliable performance in a variety of conditions, whether on mountain bike tours, trail riding, enduro or cross-country.
Available in three diameters – 160 mm, 180 mm and 203 mm – it allows braking power to be tailored to the bike’s specifications and the rider’s needs.
Its standard 6-bolt mounting (44 mm centre-to-centre diameter) ensures compatibility with hubs fitted with this mounting standard.
The Deore XT SM- Shimano -RT86 is an excellent choice for mountain bikers looking for a high-performance, durable disc that maintains excellent braking performance even when conditions become demanding.

Ice Technologies is one of the key features of this Deore XT Shimano disc.
Its unique structure consists of three superimposed layers:
Two outer layers of stainless steel to ensure strength and braking performance.
A central aluminium core to aid heat dissipation.
A design optimised to limit overheating and maintain consistent performance.
This technology reduces the disc’s operating temperature by approximately 100 °C compared to a conventional design, according to Shimano ’s test conditions.
The benefits are particularly noticeable during long descents where the brakes are under heavy strain.

Super product
Perfect as usual, in accordance with the description
Perfect as a replacement for the original discs.
Nothing to add. Shimano machining. Easy installation as 100% compatible with XT or Saint brakes (compared to other brands where the disc is thicker) Dissipate heat well even in DH.
The discs seem good at a good price. However, they do not fit into my calipers. The crimping of the floating part is too thick and the floating part is not wide enough. This means that the thick part hits my caliper.
Weighed at 114g for a 160mm, it's quite impressive given the amount of surface on the pad. (there are very very light discs just like their braking). Here, it doesn't just settle for being lighter than an SLX, it allows for better control on long descents: +"touched" +braking +endurance. The downside is the price! If you live in the mountains, you need it.
A top notch disc mounted with ventilated pads to face the mb race at the end of June it brakes hard and doesn't overheat top notch
Upgrade from 180 to 200 Good ventilation Good braking
Very satisfied with my purchase. Nothing to say about the quality of SHIMANO products
Efficiency and Look are on point!

The SM-RT86 features a multi-layer construction with an aluminium core, unlike conventional discs, which are usually made of steel. This design improves heat management during repeated braking.
Yes, provided that the braking system is compatible, the dimensions permitted by the frame and fork are observed, and the bicycle manufacturer’s recommendations are followed.
Yes. A gradual running-in period is recommended after fitting a new disc, particularly if the brake pads are also being replaced. This ensures an even distribution of the friction material and optimal performance.
This is possible provided the brake pads are still in good condition and compatible. However, worn, contaminated or unevenly finished brake pads may compromise the performance of the new disc.
You should check the thickness and look for cracks, deformations and any unusual signs of wear. For the SM-RT86, the nominal thickness is 1.75 mm: you should adhere to the wear limit specified by Shimano.
A larger diameter generally increases the lever arm and improves braking performance as well as heat management. This can be particularly beneficial for heavier riders, on steep terrain and for e-MTBs.
